What causes Trauma?
Trauma occurs when an individual finds themselves confronted with a frightening event, could be physical or psychological, that they believe threatens their life and or safety and from which they believe they are unable to protect themselves.
Trauma activates a fight-flight response that does not resolve itself. The brain continues to present information to the person trying to assist them respond to the threat more effectively. This is what is known as a trauma symptom and it can be very uncomfortable.
For example, you may have had the unfortunate experience of being in bank on the very day it was being robbed. This is a very frightening experience. Sometimes people continue to feel psychological symptoms such as thoughts or memories associated with the event, as if it is constantly happening and the person is unable to control the experience. This is Trauma. It is debilitating and distressing to be experiencing these kinds of symptoms constantly.
What kind of Trauma?
Trauma can be simple or complex. Simple trauma can happen in response to a single event, such as a bank robbery or a car accident. Complex trauma is the way it sounds. Complex. It happens over time. Complex trauma occurs due to the combined effect of multiple incidents that are stressful or traumatic. It is cummulative.
People can from time to time develop a trauma reaction within the context of a relationship. For many reasons not all relationships are healthy and when they are not, people have difficulty coping with the day to day needs of living. Relationships where there is significant conflict or chaos can over time create trauma symptoms.
